Question 1) Discuss 3 of the websites of your colleagues and write comments in person to their blogs(in their blogs)

1. Alejandro's Homepage
I don't even know what to say about his homepage. He put all the information and procedures of how to make each assignment page. It seems like he know everything perfectly. I used to visit his websites and learned for future using. Not only class assignments but also many other information and resources are provided on his homepage. His homepage played a role of textbook of this class for me.

2. Yan's Homepage
I think Yan's favorite color is pink which is the same as mine. ^^ Her homepage's displays are not only very neat and clean but also very professional. Especially, I love her tech assignment page. It looks very creative by using table with no borders and menu with images.

3. Sarah's Homepage
I was very surprised when I visited her homepage for the first time. It was totally new and very very unique, beautiful websites. I thought she major in design or arts. I love the way she display all the menu in colorful bars because it looks sooo pretty. And her biography page made me surprised again! Those pictures of herself on bio page and mySpace pages were just amazing! She looked like a super model. Sarah's homepage provides not only professional images and decorations but also many sources for study.

I wrote comments on every classmates' blogs who took the "Technological Resources for Performing Arts Educators" class with me. It seemed like few days ago when the 1st day of class began, but those tree weeks passed so fast. I was so glad to meet every one of my classmates, and Dr. John Gilbert. I learned a lot of things that were very useful. Thank all of you And Good Luck~!! ^^

Question 2) Discuss some ways that you can use your arts to enhance acquiring English literacy skills

Music and literacy have one thing in common; they are essential methods of expression of emotion and ideas. As someone said, music often defines as an universal language of mankind.
Music can be an effective tool for developing reading and writing skills because the power of song can help students retain and internalize important letter and sound relationships, spelling patterns, and phonics rules. Through the music, many literacy concepts are taught such as sight vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, phonics, and sequence.
As Clay said, language in music and language in print have many similarities such as the use of abstract symbols. Both oral language and written language can be obtained in the same manner. That is, by using them in a variety of holistic literacy experiences, and building on what the students already know about oral and written language (Clay, 1993).
When I was very young, I learned English alphabet through the world famous, "ABC Song". With rhythm and melody, it was much easier to memorize. Music can be applied for any subjects of education. Not only the alphabet, I learned simple English vocabulary and grammar through music throught "Do-Re-Mi Song". Sometimes, the same song is applied to different subjects or the same subjects are singed with different songs. But every time when I started learning foreign language, they were recommended to be memorized with simple songs no matter what languages or subjects. I posted some youtube videos how children learn English literacy through the music.

Question 3) In educational settings, discuss how technology enhances the teaching and learning environment

Development of technology brought tons of convenience for everyone's daily life. It is obvious that new technology make our lives simple and handiness. By using technology, students can be provided exceptional experiences in the classroom. For example, teachers can show and explain anything that students want to learn through the internet at any time if they have computers in the classroom. Teachers don't need to repeatedly write and erase summaries of their lecture notes if they have a projector and a computer. Students don't have to worry about their bad handwriting for term papers if they have computers. All these are examples of how technology brings convenience to the classroom.
The way of teaching also has been changing as technology is developing. Today, we are living in a world of information overload with the higher expectation of skills in demand. Students may learn faster and easier than before by using technology and information. Also technology actually helps teachers and their work. However, some people have concerns of the harmful effects of over-using technology. For example, Oppenhimer (2003) in his book titled The Flickering Mind: The False Promise of Technology in the Classroom concluded that placing computers in the classroom has been almost "entirely wasteful." Other critics have written and spoken extensively of their beliefs that schools should not use technology for a variety of reasons ranging from creating social isolation to preventing students from learning critical basic skills.
It is important for teachers to consider how computers and other technology can enhance the learning experiences of students and increase their productivity. Technology should not drive educational decisions or learning. Rather, decision making should be based on the learning and teaching needs of the student.
National Educational Technology organizations created standards for teachers. I think these standards are the most important elements to enhance the teaching and learning environment with educational technologies.
  • Teachers understand and support the importance of students learning to use educational technology as an important component of their preparation for further education, work, and life in general.
  • Teachers demonstrate their support of technology use by developing their own skills, knowledge, and strategies necessary to model effective uses of technology.
  • Teachers learn and use effective ways to integrate technology into their curriculum and use technology in ways that enhance instructional opportunities and successes for all students.
  • Teachers learn uses of technology that provide assessment feedback to parents, students, and the teacher about how well the student is learning, and then use that data to improve learning productivity.
  • Teachers understand and instill into their students the social ethical, legal and human issues surrounding the uses of technology
And students standards have been developed by the International Society for Technology(ISTE).
  • Students understand the ethical, cultural, and societal issues related to technology.
  • Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software.
  • Students develop positive attitudes toward technology uses that support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits, and productivity.
  • Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.
  • Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, prepare publications, and produce other creative works.
Using technology requires learning and efforts. As Dewey said, The belief that all genuine education comes about through experience does not mean that all experiences are genuinely or equally educative. Te be a genuine educator, technology should not be wholly relied upon and at the same time should not be ignored. In a technology driven world and society it is important to utilize modern technology to the fullest without being too dependent on it to carry out the full functions of an educator in an educational setting.

Multicultural Education Thru the ARTs

Arts has been created even before the recorded history by all cultures and by men and women and by both men and women. So, through the arts, students will learn that art is created not only by a single person, but also by groups and communities in an effort to better understand and tolerate multi-cultural differences.
Teaching through the arts requires students to engage in the act of creating art and helps students experience concepts rather than simply discussing or reading about them.
The arts can tell stories through music, plays, folk stories, dance, and visual art. Art can give students a visual representation of what life looks like in a culture. Music can do the same aurally. The arts can explain how the cultural aspects all work together. Students can discover how our perception of a work of art is influenced by what we know about the time and place it was created. Political, environmental, and cultural differences can be exploited through the arts. Students can learn how to see the world of art as inclusive, rather than exclusive, and open to a wider variety of influences, genres, media, and style than before. The arts can also bring a problem to light and unite a group of people for a cause. Teaching art from a multicultural point of view can enhance art curricula by celebration diversity and promoting social equity for all students.
As an art educators to recognize and respect not only the sociocultural diversity that may be present in the classroom, but also to design and implement culturally responsive art curricula.

Multiculturalism

Multi means many, and according to Sir Edward B. Tyler, culture defines as culture or civilization, taken in its wide ethnographic sense, is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society. And University of Wyoming defined Culture as, the values, traditions, norms, customs, arts, history, folklore, and institutions that a group of people who are unified by race, ethnicity, language, nationality, or religion share. The goals of multicultural education are multicultural knowledge, educational equity, working with cultural pluralism, empowerment, and social action. Through the education, students will understand, learn, relate, connect, synthesize, compare, transfer, respond, and express.
Technology and multicultural education can be important in engaging students around cultural artifacts to help facilitate and bridge access to language, literacy, math, science, and the arts.

hate concrete music

I'm so tired..
I feel like crying...........

I had been working on "concrete music" for more than 5 hours. Every time when I open "Audacity", it's working for the track that I put for playing but when I select some area for editing, it's not working properly. I keep reading the help page of usage but just don't know WHY.
In classroom, it looked very simple and easy. But at home, it always gives me such a hard time!!

Among the assignments, this one, "concrete music" is the most difficult one for me. By chance, very fortunately, I succeed to copy and paste and re-create additional audio tracks!!
It took 2 more hours to finish the assignment.
I'm listening the newly created audio file now... This work is highly unsatisfactory!
I think no one can like my concrete music but I can't do it anymore.
I feel soooo badn... T,.T

Team Project

Professor John Gilbert assigned me as a member of BLUE team for the group project. Gregory and JungMin are the same team with me. Three of us discussed to decide the theme for our team and presentation. We are suppose to make 8 slides Powerpoint, and/or website for reference information.

It took just few minutes to decide the theme. All three of us agreed on the idea of "Multi-Culturalism". I am satisfied with our subject of multiculturalism, because I always think about the differences between cultures and harmonies of them. We devided each person's role for preparation, and I took a charge of gethering reference videos and music files of multiculturalism. I think I can introduce the music video that I posted, whice is called B-Boy with Cannon. Nice~ ^^

Making Homepage

I have never made any kinds of websites before.
All I have done were just signed up for the membership of websites such as "cyworld" or "facebook" so I could be provide some spaces to put things on the pages. And it is very easy and simple to do so. Just log on to my own page and click upload, then upload any files that I like and write some comments. That's it!!

However,,,

making my own homepage by using HTML code is pretty hard and complicated!!
It was easy at the beginning... simply create new pages by duplicating previous page. Copy and paste any codes that I need and just change the file names. Upload some musics or images for future use. Very very simple!!
NOW, I need to make some tables to organize things by using and . It is too complicate to calculate rows and cells, open close , open , and then close it again...
I don't even know what i'm doing now!! I'm completely lost! T,.T
And moreover, I need to make a movie through the program called "movie maker"! How can I make a movie not by using camcorder but by using images on the computer??
Everything is so confused............

music education & technology

Applying technology has improved teaching and learning in music education.

There was a limit chance of listening music unless I buy all CDs or tapes. When I was 12 years old, I had music class and teacher asked students to listen 7 musics for the final exam. I was able to listen only 5 musics due to the lack of source. The first time I listened the other two musics was on final exam day. I used to be wanted to compose a music while I was riding in car and listen my piano playing right after I played a music. However, I needed pencil and notebook to compose a music and complex process required to record musical performance at that time.

Todays, we have mp3 player which allow us to download all music that we want to listen. Laptop, portable composer, digital piano, and easy recording system has solved those problems that I had before. Therefore, applying technology has acceleratedly improved teaching and learing in music education by saving time and breaking lack of sources.

in world of technology !!!

My first own piano was given to me as a birthday gift at the age of five. I was surprised and could not believe that those keyboards make tones of sounds. And I have never thought how Music Technology would be developed.

Music Technology has been developed over time. Through the computer age, the ontological range of music technology has dramatically increased. For example, computer software such as playback, recording, composition, storage, and performance are now available and those are even in development condition to create more features. Not only computer programs has contributed to develop the Music Technology, but also instrumental technologies has been contributed by inventing new technological music instrument such as digital piano and electronic guitar. Music Technology is valuable and taught in many colleges and universities today. It is tremendously expectable to see what comes next!

Learning Technology in class

The computer is one of the most important elements of my daily life. I use computer every day and night, from the moment that I wake up until go to bed. I send emails, listen to music, watch tv, download files, and place orders for shop. However, making my own homepage by using "html" is a new exprience to me.
It seemed like very easy to me at the first time to create a space called "index" which was the main page of other resources. means headline, as well as means title, and </head> means to end the headline because the "/" means to close. However, it's getting harder and harder as time goes by. Now, I have to use very complicated codes to put some musics and images. <br />And there are even three different ways of putting music on website!! <br />Development of technology brought lots of works those who were using them. I have never thought or cared about my class web sites before. But now, I just relized how useful to learn the technology so that I would be able to use the technology by myself in the near future. <br />Today, we are living the computer society. Almost everyone uses computer somehow. And using computer skill is a good tool for both students and teachers because it helps communication in simple and easier way. By just clicking, we can learn more and faster. I hope I can own nice and professional homepage by the end of this class~. ^^ <br /></span></span></span> <br /> <div style='clear: both;'></div> </div> <div class='post-footer'> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-1'> <span class='post-author vcard'> Posted by <span class='fn' itemprop='author' itemscope='itemscope' itemtype='http://schema.org/Person'> <span itemprop='name'>SeungEun's</span> </span> </span> <span class='post-timestamp'> at <meta content='http://sh1776.blogspot.com/2009/06/learning-technology-in-class.html' itemprop='url'/> <a class='timestamp-link' href='http://sh1776.blogspot.com/2009/06/learning-technology-in-class.html' rel='bookmark' title='permanent link'><abbr class='published' itemprop='datePublished' title='2009-06-12T11:15:00-07:00'>11:15 AM</abbr></a> </span> <span class='post-comment-link'> <a class='comment-link' href='http://sh1776.blogspot.com/2009/06/learning-technology-in-class.html#comment-form' onclick=''> No comments: </a> </span> <span class='post-icons'> <span class='item-control blog-admin pid-494974107'> <a href='https://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=717816935824610593&postID=5950400347436835794&from=pencil' title='Edit Post'> <img alt='' class='icon-action' height='18' src='https://resources.blogblog.com/img/icon18_edit_allbkg.gif' width='18'/> </a> </span> </span> <div class='post-share-buttons goog-inline-block'> </div> </div> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-2'> <span class='post-labels'> </span> </div> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-3'> <span class='post-location'> </span> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div></div> <div class="date-outer"> <h2 class='date-header'><span>Wednesday, June 10, 2009</span></h2> <div class="date-posts"> <div class='post-outer'> <div class='post hentry uncustomized-post-template' itemprop='blogPost' itemscope='itemscope' itemtype='http://schema.org/BlogPosting'> <meta content='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFmHx70bAEqKhCZJgCWy_VWOVxSaDYfl6ymUz9neSgSub-ZIoD3runqG-4oWhIOVo5a1-KzvLI7h3fU2CuJpoUarAMw2R1O-OY2rnsfAdfu3AtsK50vP1rX3GWlZteeuWpsbFjOkOWKj0/s320/D5108XMMUS2.jpg' itemprop='image_url'/> <meta content='717816935824610593' itemprop='blogId'/> <meta content='7238734904432948624' itemprop='postId'/> <a name='7238734904432948624'></a> <h3 class='post-title entry-title' itemprop='name'> <a href='http://sh1776.blogspot.com/2009/06/music-music-education.html'>music & music education</a> </h3> <div class='post-header'> <div class='post-header-line-1'></div> </div> <div class='post-body entry-content' id='post-body-7238734904432948624' itemprop='description articleBody'> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFmHx70bAEqKhCZJgCWy_VWOVxSaDYfl6ymUz9neSgSub-ZIoD3runqG-4oWhIOVo5a1-KzvLI7h3fU2CuJpoUarAMw2R1O-OY2rnsfAdfu3AtsK50vP1rX3GWlZteeuWpsbFjOkOWKj0/s1600-h/D5108XMMUS2.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349098519076542818" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFmHx70bAEqKhCZJgCWy_VWOVxSaDYfl6ymUz9neSgSub-ZIoD3runqG-4oWhIOVo5a1-KzvLI7h3fU2CuJpoUarAMw2R1O-OY2rnsfAdfu3AtsK50vP1rX3GWlZteeuWpsbFjOkOWKj0/s320/D5108XMMUS2.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 269px; height: 320px;" /></a><br /><span style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0);"><span style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Music exists everywhere on earth.
